• After a certain operating point (SIR level), GPRS transmission rate

saturates. So, EDGE introduces a new modulation scheme (8-PSK) to

drive data rates higher.

– This gives three bits per symbol as compared with one bit per

symbol for GSM

• With this modulation, EDGE supports higher data rates for packet-

switched services with EGPRS.
