
EDGE As An Evolution Path to 3G
• EDGE was first proposed to ETSI
• Feasibility study was completed in 1997 and approved by ETSI
• EDGE satisfies the 384 kbps data rate requirement.
• It is a radio interface improvement but can be thought of as a system
concept that allows both GSM and GPRS to offer new services (i.e.
higher data rates and multimedia)

EGPRS=Enhanced GPRS
BTS=Base Station
MS=Mobile station
GGSN= Gateway GPRS support node
SGSN= Serving GPRS support node
PCU=Packet control unit
TRU=Transceiver unit
EDGE does not bring about any direct architecture impacts (GSM 03.60)
